Navy Fraternization Policies

Navy Fraternization PoliciesNavy Fraternization PoliciesThe Navys policies on fraternization are contained in OPNAV Instruction 5370.2B, Navy Fraternization Policy. The Fraternization Policy Personal relationships between officer and enlisted members that are unduly familiar and that do leid respect differences in rank and grade are prohibitedand violate long-standing custom and tradition of the naval service. Similar relationships that are unduly familiar between officers or between enlisted members of different rank or grade may also be prejudicial to good order and discipline or of a nature to bring discredit on the naval service and are prohibited. Commands are expected to take administrative and disciplinary action as necessary to correct such inappropriate behavior. The policies listed here are lawful general orders. Violation of unterstellung policies subject the involved members to disciplinary action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Fraternization is th e term traditionally used to identify personal relationships that contravene the customary bounds of acceptable senior-subordinate relationships. Although it has most commonly been applied to officer-enlisted relationships, fraternization also includes improper relationships and social interaction between officer members as well as between enlisted members. Background of the Policy Navy has historically relied upon custom and tradition to define the bounds of acceptable personal relationships among its members. Proper social interaction among officer and enlisted members has always been encouraged as it enhances unit morale and esprit de corps. At the same time, unduly familiar personal relationships between officers and enlisted members have traditionally been contrary to naval custom because they undermine the respect for authority, which is essential to Navys ability to accomplish its military mission. Over 200 years of seagoing experience have demonstrated that seniors must maintain thoroughly professional relationships with juniors at all times. Misuse of Grade or Position This custom recognizes the need to prevent theuse of a senior grade or position in such a way that it results in (or gives the appearance of) favoritism, preferential treatment, personal gain, or involves actions that otherwise may reasonably be expected to undermine good order, discipline, authority, or high unit morale. Juniors to Recognize and Respect In like manner, custom requires that junior personnel recognize and respect the authority inherent in a seniors grade, rank, or position. This recognition of authority is evidenced by observance and enforcement of the military courtesies and customs that have traditionally defined proper senior-subordinate relationships. Fraternization is Gender-Neutral Historically, and as used here, fraternization is a gender-neutral concept. Its focus is the detriment to good order and discipline resulting from the erosion of respect for authority inherent in an unduly familiar senior-subordinate relationship, not the sex of the members involved. In this sense, fraternization is a uniquely military concept, although abuse of a seniors position for personal gain and actual or perceived preferential treatments are leadership and management problems that also arise in civilian organizations. In the context of military life, the potential erosion of respect for the authority and leadership position of a senior in grade or rank can have an enormously negative effect on good order and discipline and seriously undermine a units effectiveness. Therefore, the prohibition of fraternization serves a valid, mission-essential purpose. Prohibited Relationships Personal relationships between officer and enlisted members that are unduly familiar and that do not respect differences in grade or rank are prohibited. Such relationships are prejudicial to good order and discipline and violate long-standing traditions of the Nava l service. Personal relationships between chief petty officers (E-7 to E-9) and junior personnel (E-l to E-6), who are assigned to the same command, that are unduly familiar and that do not respect differences in grade or rank are prohibited. Likewise, personal relationships that are unduly familiar between staff/instructor and student personnel within Navy training commands, and between recruiters and recruits/applicants that do not respect differences in grade, rank, or the staff/student relationship are prohibited. Such relationships are prejudicial to good order and disciplineand violate long-standing traditions of the Naval service. When prejudicial to good order or of a nature to bring discredit on the Naval service, personal relationships between officer members or between enlisted members that are unduly familiar and that do not respect differences in grade or rank are prohibited. Prejudice to good order and discipline or discredit to the Naval service may result from, but are not limited to, circumstances which Call into question a seniors objectivityResult in actual or apparent preferential treatmentUndermine the authority of a seniorCompromise the chain of command A Punishable Offense Fraternization, as defined above, is prohibited and punishable as an offense under the UCMJ. It is impossible to set forth every act that may be prejudicial to good order and discipline or that is service discrediting because the surrounding circumstances often determine whether the conduct in question is inappropriate. Proper social interaction and appropriate personal relationships are an important parte of unit morale and esprit de corps. Officer and enlisted participation on command sports teams and other command-sponsored events intended to build unit morale and camaraderie are healthy and clearly appropriate. Defining Unduly Familiar Relationships Dating, shared living accommodations, intimate or sexual relations, commercial solicitations, private busines s partnerships, gambling and borrowing money between officers and enlisted members, regardless of Service, are unduly familiar and are prohibited. Likewise, such conduct between officer members and between enlisted members of different rank or grade would be unduly familiar and constitute fraternization if the conduct is prejudicial to good order and discipline or is Service discrediting. Junior and Senior Grade or Rank Prejudice to good order and discipline and discredit to the Naval service may occur when the degree of familiarity between a senior and a junior in grade or rank is such that the seniors objectivity is called into question. This loss of objectivity by the senior may result in actual or apparent preferential treatment of the junior, and use of the seniors position for the private gain of either the senior or junior member. The actual or apparent loss of objectivity by a senior may result in the perception the senior is no longer capable or willing to exercise fairness and make judgments on the basis of merit. Fraternization Outside the Direct Chain of Command Unduly familiar relationships may exist with individuals outside ones direct chain of command. By long-standing custom and tradition, chief petty officers (E-7 to E-9) are separate and distinct leaders within their assigned command.Chief petty officersprovide leadership not just within their direct chain of command, but for the entire unit. The prohibitions listed in this policy are based on this unique leadership responsibility. While the existence of a direct senior-subordinate supervisory relationship is not a prerequisite for a relationship between juniors and seniors to constitute fraternization, the fact that individuals are in the same chain of command increases the likelihood that an unduly familiar relationship between senior and junior officers, or between senior and junior enlisted members will result in prejudice to good order and discipline or discredit to the naval service. Marriage and Fraternization Conduct, which constitutes fraternization, is not excused or mitigated by a subsequent marriage between the offending parties. Service members who are married or otherwise related (father/son, etc.) to other service members, must maintain the requisite respect and decorum attending the official relationship while either is on duty or in uniform in public. Compatible withsea/shore rotation policyand the needs of the service, service members married to each other will not be assigned to the same chain of command. Responsibility of Senior Grade Members Seniors throughout the chain of command will Be especially attentive to their personal associations such that their actions and the actions of their subordinates are supportive of the military chain of command and good order and discipline. Since circumstances are important in determining whether personal relationships constitute fraternization, seniors must provide guidance on appropriate relationships that build unit cohesion and morale.Ensure that all members of the command are aware of the policies set forth here.Address the offending conduct by taking appropriate action, to include counseling, issuing letters of instruction, comments on fitness reports or performance evaluations, reassignment, and/or, if necessary, by taking appropriate disciplinary steps. The responsibility for preventing inappropriate relationships must rest primarily on the senior. While the senior party is expected to control and preclude the development of inappropriate relationships, this policy is applicable to both members and both are accountable for their own conduct.

Study Your offices dim lighting could be making you a dimwit

Study Your offices dim lighting could be making you a dimwitStudy Your offices dim lighting could be making you a dimwitIf you are having trouble remembering what you did today at work, your office light may be the culprit. A new study published in Hippocampus found that low lighting makes it harder to learn and remember tasks.Dim bulbs create dimbulbsWhen Michigan State University researchers exposed Nile grass rats to dim lights for four weeks, the rats brain capacity decreased by an average of 30%. The researchers found that the rats hippocampus - the brain region that is critical for learning and memory - was significantly impaired by the lack of bright lighting. When we exposed the rats to dim light, mimicking the cloudy days of Midwestern winters or typical indoor lighting, the animals showed impairments in spatial learning, Antonio Nunez, the studys co-author said. This is similar to when people cant find their way back to their cars in a busy parking lot after spending a few hours in a shopping mall or movie theater.Dim lighting is a problem that affects many of us. We may live in grayer climates where low lighting is out of our control. Or, we could work after dark where our only lighting is the blue screens coming from our computer monitor. The Environmental Protection Agency calculates that people spend 90% of their time indoors. But if you find your memory lapsing, theres a simple cure - more light. Take the rats in the study as an example. When the forgetful and learning-impaired rats under the influence of dim lighting got exposed to bright lights for four weeks (after a monthlong break), their memories and performance skills improved and returned back to normal. Many of us may bedrngnis be thinking that our mood lighting is putting us at a disadvantage. Unlike other workplace environmental factors, your offices overhead lighting is not an obvious connection to your job performance. But this study is a reminder that the amount of lighting can make just as much a difference in our output as rude coworkers or hectic deadlines can. Mood lighting may help you relax, but if you want to get work properly done, turn on another light.

7 Signs Youre CEO Material

7 Signs You’re CEO Material 7 Signs You’re CEO Material You may be starting in your first entry-level position, or you maybe be an executive VP at an established company. Wherever you are in your career, if you’re ambitious and goal-driven, you may have one question in your mind: will I be the CEO someday? Becoming a CEO often requires a certain amount of being in the right place at the right time, but having certain qualities will significantly boost the chance that you’ll be considered for the spot of CEO â€"  or any leadership position, for that matter. To find more about what those essential qualities are, we reached out to Tiffany Franklin, executive career consultant and founder of TJF Career Coaching , who broke down what it takes to be considered as CEO material. CEOs are responsible for significant decisions about the strategy and future of the organizations they lead. While a CEO must maintain stability within an organization, they also must sometimes take risks that can result in both short- and long-term pay-offs for an organization. Enter the importance of being a strategic risk taker. Franklin describes this as “having that ability to consider a confluence of multiple internal and external factors, both for the organization and the global market as a whole.” She adds that strategic risk takers “see lessons from the past, but you are looking to the future, in terms of marketing, timing, and people. You’re learning from mistakes, but yet you will take a calculated risk.” Communication is one of the foundation stones for being a leader. For CEOs, Franklin says, “you want to motivate and empower the people around you… To be able to sell your vision, and also outline a path to make it a reality.” She adds that a big part of that is relationship-building skills.  Communication and relationship-building skills are also an integral part of generating employee satisfaction as a leader. As a CEO, a critical component of approval is employee satisfaction. In a 2016 Glassdoor study on the factors that predict high CEO approval, it was found that a one-star increase in employee satisfaction (measured by the overall Glassdoor rating of a company) predicts a 36.9 percent improvement in CEO approval. Being a CEO generally doesn’t happen in the first year of career, and often doesn’t even happen in the first decade of your career. It is a place of leadership that, more often than not, is earned through repeatedly facing professional challenges and retaining a diligent focus on self-improvement. There are multiple challenges that are good to take on throughout your career in order to boost your leadership skills and gain recognition among professional peers. On top of volunteering for leadership positions within your company and pursuing leadership credentials like an MBA, Franklin also recommends getting involved with affinity groups at your workplace, as well as getting involved in professional associations, volunteering for boards of directors, and even looking for community service projects that have leadership opportunities. It’s not enough for somebody to be ambitious, says Franklin, but they also need emotional intelligence. “So much of being a CEO is being decisive and purposeful, yet thoughtful when you’re making decisions,” she adds. For thoughtful decision-making, as well as building strong, trust-filled relationships, not to mention being a good communicator, emotional intelligence is key. While a CEO is often the face of an organization, they are supported by a team of people who are helping them maximally perform. According to Franklin, having CEO potential means being self-aware enough to know what you’re good at, but also what you may lack, and building a team that complements the areas you have deficiencies in. In turn, she says, this makes a team that can challenge each other, and also brings different things to the table. CEOs are people who trust can be put in to get a job done. CEOs are also good managers and delegators. You may find that you’re naturally asked by people in your organization to take on big projects and to lead teams. But putting yourself in situations like that whenever the opportunity arises can also help hone your leadership skills. “I think when you volunteer to go above and beyond, not immediately expecting anything, people will start to take notice,” says Franklin. The best CEOs are visionaries for the organizations they lead. “It’s not just trying to figure out what the trends are and jumping on those, it’s being a thought leader,” says Franklin. Another critical component of being a thought leader is the ability to translate your visions into concrete actions that employees within your organization can take. Even if you’re not strong in some of the leadership capabilities that CEOs require, there are many routes to take to bulk up your management prowess. For one, MBA programs are always a good way to learn leadership skills and show your commitment to be a good manager. Franklin also says that If you don’t have the time or availability, there are also smaller courses and certificate programs that you can take in leadership. Reading books in MBA curricula can also both help you build your leadership skills and make for a great conversation starter at professional events, she points out. Then, she says, “keep networking, building skills, and stretching yourself to get to the visionary piece.” Are you an employer? Check out our Talent Solutions Blog . Thanks for finding us! How a $26 Trip to Walgreens can Improve Your Professional Life How a $26 Trip to Walgreens can Improve Your Professional Life These are the 5 must-have items for any desk, which probably aren’t in yours: Thank You Cards $7 The multi-purpose lifesaver! Truly, if you get nothing else on this list, get a stack of thank you cards. Nothing shows appreciation more than an unexpected, hand-written thank you note. Your co-workers are far more likely to be there for you in the future when they know that you value their help and input. From assistance with a project, to acknowledging a recommendation, thank you cards are great for fostering strong professional relationships. Protein $5 I don’t know about you, but at least once a month I’m headed out the door and my lunch options are a can of tuna and some expired oatmeal. Whether you get a lunch break or not, there are going to be those days when you are either too busy to leave work, or your blood sugar feels like it’s tied to a bowling ball. Have a stash of nuts, jerky or even a jar of peanut butter in your desk for quick pick-me-ups throughout the day. If you see someone dragging, and you know they’re buried in work, offer them a bag of peanuts and watch their eyes light up like you just gave them an iPad mini. Headphones $8 Sometimes you just have to “go under”. Have you ever been on an airplane and put your ear buds in just so that no one would talk to you? It’s the universal sign for “go away”. Every day, every hour at work there are multiple distractions. We’re used to it for the most part, but sometimes its crunch time. No distractions, just getting work done! They are also great to have on hand for hands-free calls. And please feel free to send me a thank you note when you win that radio contest, and you and your boss are going to the super bowl. Hygiene Products $6 It happens to the best of us, the cleanest of us even: the afternoon funk. Three simple things will keep you from being the smelly guy: mints or gum, deodorant and wet wipes. Whether you need to freshen up before a client lunch meeting, or your coffee breath is kickin’, $6 worth of products can keep you fresh at work. Smelling good and feeling fresh are serious game changers for confidence levels at work. Ever had to give a presentation when you were unsure? Its the absolute worst. A To-Do List $0 I prefer to use “notes” on my Apple devices. That way, my to-do list is refreshed across all of my devices, and it is always with me. Be sure that this list is prioritized and constantly in front of you. If you prefer an old school pen and paper, be sure to have a notebook dedicated specifically to this purpose. Having five sheets of random paper with various tasks written on them doesn’t do anyone any good. One trip to Walgreens may not change your life, but it can make the office a far better place to be. We spend a considerable amount of time at work; why not make it better for you and those around you with these simple and cheap items? Try being the grateful, good smelling, go-to co-worker. I think you’ll like it.

How to Stay on Top of Your Job Search Via Mobile Devices

How to Stay on Top of Your Job Search Via Mobile Devices How to Stay on Top of Your Job Search Via Mobile Devices Modern job-seekers have it pretty easy when it comes to staying on top of their searches.  Instead of flipping through the classifieds section every morning, lists of open positions, catered to your specific specialty, are automatically delivered to your email inbox.  No more cold calling, perusing storefronts for “help wanted” signs or walk-ins to your favorite establishment, begging for a position, any position.  With modern technologies, job boards bring potential employers directly to your keyword search or resume listing. With all of these advances in technology, why are you still tied to your desktop computer or unable to check listings for multiple hours while you’re on the go?  If the increasing cost and rising, media-hype driven popularity of increasingly sophisticated mobile devices hasn’t clued you into their usefulness, here are a few reasons you should be using your phone, tablet or other on-the-go device to stay on top of your job search. Maximize Your Time One of the biggest advantages of using your mobile device to track your job-search activities is the ability to multi-task or avoid wasted time during otherwise unproductive activities.  Tired of playing Sudoku on the train?  Why not check your email for the most recent open job listings.  Oh, by the waythat job just opened up 15 minutes ago.   Use your smartphone or mobile tablet to check in during breaks, travel or other breaks in the daily action.  Being able to see and reply to the latest listings ahead of the competition is key to landing the offer in today’s competitive work environment. Notifications Give You the Edge Speaking on staying on top of the latest job listings; no matter how attentive you may be to swiping down for the latest inbox updates, even the most diligent mobile users can’t be actively checking their email at all times.  Enter advances in mobile technology in the form notifications. We’ll admit that when it comes to the latest news alert, social media update or re-post, notifications can get a tadannoying.  But before you throw the baby out with the bathwater, notifications can actually be a job seekers best friend.  Most online job boards, such as Simply Hired, allow users to set customized notifications that will “push” or appear on their phone’s lock screen.  Don’t want to be notified every five minutes?  Set your preferences for hourly, daily or less.  Staying on top of your search has never been easier. Keep That Resume Handy What if that email or notification alerts you to the job of your dreams, while you’re sitting in a meeting, running errands or in the middle of an all-day social event?  With advances in mobile technology, having your resume ready to hit submit at the click of a button is no problem. With cloud-based storage, applicants can store multiple versions of their resumes, cover letters, transcripts and other important documents for easy attachment to applications, sending to recruiters, networking with friends, colleagues and more.  No more waiting until you get home or are in front of that clunky desktop.  The ability to move quickly means you have the first crack at the best opportunities in addition to appearing professional and responsive to those in the position to help get you employed. Dealing With Mobile Unfriendliness In today’s day and age, it’s becoming increasingly less likely that you’ll encounter websites that haven’t been optimized for mobile devices.  Browsers and search engines such as Google Chrome and the popular corresponding Google web search, even knock sites down in rankings if they aren’t up to speed with the latest on-the-go trends.  This doesn’t mean, however, that you wont occasionally encounter a site that doesn’t play nicely with your mobile device.  While speed is the key in today’s day and age, it’s in your best interest to get your application right.  In this case, email yourself a link to the open job position and get on it as soon as you can in order to avoid sacrificing quality. How do you use your mobile device to search for a job?  Drop us a line with your tips and tricks and maybe your advice will help future job-seekers looking to stay on top of their mobile game.

How to Make Your Hobby a Career

How to Make Your Hobby a Career How to Make Your Hobby a Career Do you have a hobby- something you really enjoy doing in your spare time? Perhaps you love gardening, making jewelry, painting, caring for animals, taking photographs, performing or hiking. Like many people, you may dream of spending less time at work and more time enjoying your pastime. Maybe you can spend time on your hobby while you earn a living! It is possible to turn your hobby into a full-fledged career. Why You Should Consider Turning Your Hobby Into a Career The way you make a living should reflect who you are as an individual. When choosing an occupation, you must take into account your interests, personality, and work-related values. Given the amount of time you spend at work, it is essential to enjoy what you do while you are there. It is mind-boggling that most people dont give any consideration to the leisure activities they enjoy when they are deciding what they want to do to make a living. Perhaps its because even Websters Dictionary defines a hobby as a pursuit outside ones regular occupation (Merriam-Webster Online). You should consider breaking that rule. Not only will you enjoy your job, but you will probably be very good at it. Theres a good chance you have skills related to your hobby. Why not earn your living doing something you both enjoy and at which you excel. You may ask yourself, Whos going to hire someone who loves making jewelry? Good question. With some hobbies, you may not have to wait for someone to hire you. Instead, you can  start your own business. That may be the best way to incorporate your hobby into your career. Find out If Being an Entrepreneur Is for You Those whose pastimes involve creating things, for example, jewelry, clothing, or pottery, may do well to sell those items on their own. Before you go forward with your plans, though, you should find out whether being an entrepreneur is for you. Susan Ward  has written an article that will help you decide  if you have what it takes to be self-employed. Lets say you decide that running a small business isnt for you. You can still turn your hobby into a career, but you may have to get some formal training. Lets go back to the person who loves making beaded jewelry. He or she probably knows the latest jewelry styles, has an understanding of what styles look good on different people and also is skilled in using the tools of the trade. Several options exist for him or her. That individual could take  classes to learn how to be a jewelry designer  or even get a college degree. Alternatively, he or she could become a jewelry buyer for a department store or become a salesperson in a jewelry store. He or she could also learn to become a jeweler by taking courses at a trade school or doing an apprenticeship. Reasons Your Pastime Might Not Make a Good Career While many people have great success when they incorporate their hobby into their career, this option isnt a good one for everyone. One reason is that your hobby may not translate well into a career. You should do your homework to make sure you will be able to make a living. You may really love spending all day doing something you would do even if you werent getting paid for it, but reality will kick in when you cant make enough money to live on. Another reason is that even if you enjoy your hobby tremendously, you may not have what it takes to make a living doing it. For example, you may derive great pleasure from training your 34 parakeets to sing the National Anthem, but that doesnt mean you are cut out to be an animal trainer. Whether you choose a career based on your pastime or on something else, you should  research your choice thoroughly. If you find out there are aspects that  you would not like about it, stick to your day job, as they say, and save your hobby for your free time.

HumanPowered Submarines Compete

HumanPowered Submarines Compete HumanPowered Submarines Compete Building a submarine is not an everyday thing with easy-to-find answers, says Chris Nunes, in an understatement. But building a human-powered sub is exactly what the Florida Atlantic University ocean engineering major is doing as head mechanical engineer of the universitys human-powered submarine club. He will be a key team member when the sub enters the 12th International Submarine Races (ISR), a biennial competition, scheduled to start June 24 at the Naval Surface Warfare Centers Carderock Division facility in West Bethesda, MD. The ISR program is a competition for engineering students from around the world that involves designing, building, and racing a human-powered submarine. Engineering student Chris Nunes. Image: FAU Team members wear scuba gear and compete in one- and two-person submarines that run submerged along a 100-meter course in the Carderock basin. The ISR began in Florida in 1989 and has been held in Maryland since 1995. Prizes are awarded in a number of categories, including speed, design, best use of composite materials, and innovation. Nunes, 22, a fourth-year junior scheduled to graduate in 2014, is already a veteran of two competitions and a pilot in both. Describing the last ISR experience as amazing, he says, All the teams had very interesting solutions to unique problems. The biggest downfall of the whole race is that the water is freezing cold, a harsh contrast from our normal beach testing n Florida. We came in fastest overall, fastest in our class, second place overall, and got the smooth operator award for our teamwork and reliability. Florida Atlantic University’s submarine during construction. Image: FAU His second race in England last summer on a u-turn and slalom course was much different from the conventional drag race at ISR. I did crash while piloting the sub, which led to testing the durability of our fins. It turns out that pourable plastic is stronger than the half-inch aluminum rod that I bent, he explains. We were able to fix that and come in first in agility and second overall. Mechanical Challenges Nunes says the two major mechanical challenges the team faces are corrosion and durability. To overcome these, the team normally uses aluminum, plastic, stainless steel hardware and composite material. If any steel parts, such as the drive gears, are incorporated in the sub design due to cost or for any reason, they are sealed in an air- or oil-filled housing to separate them from the harsh testing environment in the ocean. Corrosion affects his team more than others because the race is in fresh water, and most teams test in fresh water. Since the university is just minutes from the beach, We use the space and fight the corrosion, he said. Durability is approached by extensive planning and testing. Having an ongoing project [means] that if something breaks or is not how we like it, a lot of focus can go into fixing that one system and making the whole product more reliable for the upcoming competition. For this years event, the team is not only overhauling its one man sub, called Talon 1, but is also building a new two-man sub. Applying Skills Dr. Edgar An, the teams advisor and a professor in the Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering, says the team is incorporating electronics to control the diving electronically. They have to figure out how that works, write the software, and determine what kind of sensors and electronics are needed, he adds. They have to think of every single aspect. From his perspective, the most important and difficult tasks are designing a propeller and analyzing system performance. The Florida Atlantic team is also focused on winning back its title as Guinness World Record holder, a designation that it lost a decade ago. Even though for core team members, the project takes up more of their time than their actual classroom work, they say its well worth it. Its very rewarding to know that I am getting more out of my college tuition than just a degree, Nunes said. He added, I have learned everything from 3-D CAD modeling to team skills, [including] fluid dynamics, mechanical intuition, hardware specification, working with fiberglass, coordinating building efforts, communicating more effectively, working within a budget, general problem solving, and mainly the exposure to actually getting things done instead of just doing the math and speculating. Dr. An says it also gives students an advantage in applying for internships and jobs after graduation. Aside from all of that, Nunes describes the experience as like nothing else when he is anxiously floating in the sub at the starting line, waiting to hear the buzzer and the announcer call over the hydrophone, Talon 1: Go, go, go. At that point, you just have to give it all you got and hope all of your hard work holds true until you cross the finish line. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. Two major mechanical challenges the team faces are corrosion and durability.

LinkedIn Profile Optimization 2019 Guide to Finding Jobs on LinkedIn

LinkedIn Profile Optimization 2019 Guide to Finding Jobs on LinkedIn LinkedIn Profile Optimization 2019 Guide to Finding Jobs on LinkedIn Social networking has revolutionized communication and information sharing. Networking is not about how many people you know; it is about how many people know you. The LinkedIn profile has become a compulsory assumption rather that a preference. Which means, employers do not ask whether you have a LinkedIn profile anymore; they assume that you do. Actually, a large number of job vacancies that are full by the course of time are never never announced to th public and in cases where they are, then they are occupied by people who have a LinkedIn connect with the employeer. According to Jobvite, over the last 6 years, 94% of recruiters have taken to social media for recruiting. Your LinkedIn profile should clerly demonstrate the sort of job you are seeking and why you are the ideal candidate for that profile. How do you want the world to see you professionally? What kinds of work do you enjoy doing? Why are you on LinkedIn? Those are the questions you should think about when creating your LinkedIn profile, so it’s aligned with your personal brand. Our Guide on Optimizing your LinkedIn profile will broadly cover the following: What is a LinkedIn profile? LinkedIn is the leading social networking site for professionals. It focuses on their educational qualifications, work history and professional interests. An average linkedin account offers a multiverse of features including: Finding and adding professional contacts Requesting and receiving recommendations to validate your expertise Post your resume online and manage the information that’s publicly available about you as a professional. In order to receive necessary updates about job vacancies, news of specific companies and more, find those companies on LinkedIn and follow them. To build your connections you can create and join professional online networking groups which are made based on industry, age, location and educational background. Discover inside connections that help unlock the hidden job market and land jobs. Post public messages- status which are typically professional in nature. Create and collaborate on projects, gather data, share files, and solve problems. Check the notoifications for how many times people have seen your profile and you also have the option to check who has viewed your profile. Upload a digital portfolio. Ask your connection with a lot of other connections to introduce you to them. Post and distribute job listings to find talent for your company. In fact the best feature that a LinkedIn profile provides is the ability to ask contacts in your network for solutions to professional challenges. The LinkedIn Answers feature leverages the power of the user’s trusted professional network to ask businessrelated questions and receive industryspecific answers in return. Why do you need a LinkedIn Profile When someone says they are not on Facebook (anymore), we can attach a million reasons for the same. Privacy. Distraction. Just looking for a change. Take your pick. And in the post-privacy scandal era, there's an almost-magnetic borderline-hipster persona around not being on Facebook anymore. Good use of LinkedIn can boost both SEO and organic visibility. Your LinkedIn profile should be compatible with your other social media accounts. Also, the information you put on LinkedIn should be the same as your resume and shouldn't differ. Your LinkedIn network of connections can also be used in multiple ways: Use your connections to find jobs, business opportunities and people that are recommended to you by someoneone. Recruiters can put up jobs and look for potentuial employees Those looking for jobs can check a recruiters profile end to end and find which contacts in their connections can introduce you to them. Here you’ll find invitations to connect, or become someone’s contact, as well as messages from contacts. You can send, delete, search for, and archive messages, too. If you are a job seeker, you may be notified of job openings through messages, so don’t forget to check your inbox every so often- though you will get email notifications of these messages as well. Note: You do not have to accept a request to connect. Who uses LinkedIn? According to LinkedInPedia, there are 6 types of people who use LinkedIn. Job Seekers: To actively seek out careers and find new opportunities Active Passive Professionals who are currently unemployed Professionals looking for a change Recruiters Representatives of companies that seek out human capital or talented individuals for their companies How to make the most of LinkedIn? In order to find the right candidates you can use LinkedIn's advanced search functions. Indulge in sharing latest news and updates regarding job openings and vacancies in your company. Build lists of potential candidates. In order to attract the potential right candidates optimize your LinkedIn profile. Business Development Professionals Find and build potential connections and form relationships with them. When trying to increase the consumer base of your brand, post lots of infographic as your status as they are the most preferred by LinkedIn as oposed to videos and pictures. Another beneficial platform that LinkedIn offers is LinkedIn Pulse wherae you can get the conversationas going by writing opinion based leadership and field work articles, industry research, etc. You can also opt for LinkedIn's Advanced Search Features and filter your target audience to connect to the people whom you don't know. The promise The promise is what your profile expresses and how to manage what your prospective employer can view. Optimizing To optimize your LinkedIn profile for the most preferrd LinkedIn jobs: Include a professional header Introduce keywords in your job position or title. Link to your company’s blog under “websites”. Add a Twitter handle, if applicable. Claim a unique URL to use for email signatures. Include keywords in a well written summary. List specialities and skills above the fold. Moving recommendations closer to the top of the page. Headline Melanie Pinola in her book, LinkedIn In 30 Minutes, directs users to make sure their LinkedIn profile has a targeted headline. Not only should the headline clearly state your career focus, it’s also the most important place to add a keyword or two, because this influences how you appear in search results. As Kent puts it, POST with intention. REPOST with caution.” Summary Optimize your summary section by including key skills and achievements in it. In the summary section write 3-4 bullet points and summarize the your career in those points. This will give the recruiters a brief about your career. While including skills in your summary section make sure you put skills that are specific to your trget profile. Highlight and prioritize your managerial and professinal skills like stakeholder management, business development, PL Management, etc. Also make sure not to write soft skills like communication, hard working, self-motivated, etc. because this leaves a negative impact on the recruiter makeing him think that you are just trying to fill up the blank space. In addition to this, while adding your achievements in the summary, mention any important awards and recognition that you have achieved in your career till date. Also make it a point to quantify your performance throughout the summary section which acts as brownie points for the recruiters. Skills You have the option to add “skills” to your LinkedIn profile, but now you can do more with “skills.” You can track the top companies and LinkedIn profiles related to those skills, see related skills you may want to add to your profile, and find job openings related to those skills. Keywords Your LinkedIn profile must include keywords for specific skills that match your desired job. Recommendations Ask for recommendations from your co-workers, managers, boss etc. Ask your supervisors to write you recommendations. Also, you can write one for them in return as well. Recommendations form managers and supervisors are of lot of iportance. LinkedIn Profile vs Resume If you already have a nice, up-to-date resume, then it won't take long for you to optimize your LinkedIn profile. Nevertheless, there are big differences between the two. Address the following differences to ensure your LinkedIn profile shines: Level of Specificity Your traditional resume is tailored for a single opportunity, whereas your LinkedIn profile should speak to all potential employers. Get specific with each position on your profile, and include additional details, including accomplishments, awards, skills or special presentations. The Length It’s fair game to elaborate on LinkedIn. Include past positions, initiatives, skills, college projects, publications, and interests. But remember, it still needs to be concise and compelling. Most importantly, use the profile to tell your unique story. Recommendations There is no need to write recommendations in your resume, whearas your LinkedIn profile should be littered with third-party references. Recommendations allow employers to quickly assess the reliability and accuracy of your profile. Profile as a Platform Your LinkedIn profile is a platform where both job seekers and recruiters can interact, learn, and contact each other. It’s an intersctive resume more than a statement of skills. Optimize your LinkedIn profile to best utilize this platform. Basic or Premium Try the “Basic” account to start. You will likely find it meets all of your job-searching needs. Choosing a “Premium” plan may be advisable if you are a recruiter or hiring manager and would like extra tools to help you find qualified candidates. LinkedIn Jobs According to The 2016 Job Search Guide, these are the following steps in which you can optimize your LinkedIn profile to turn your future role into more than just a LinkedIn job: (***STEP 1: Specialize Evolve:Make a list of all of your skills and know where they can take you. Uncover what you’re best at and continue to hone those skills throughout your career.STEP 2: Plot your Progress: Use your specialized skills as a compass for the future. Write a six month, twelve month, and two year plan that describe how you want your career to progress and hold yourself accountable.STEP 3: Define “Balance”: There’s no magic formula for work-life balance. Everyone’s different. Make a highly specific list with your top priorities in life and rank them honestly. How much time should you spend on personal versus professional pursuits? Only you can decide. STEP 4: Combine Passion Problem-Solving: Having passion for your work is wonderful. But it’s your ability to apply that passion to your organization’s most pressing problems that will ultimately allow you to grow with the business. STEP 5: Create Lasting Relationships: Your network is your net worth. Surro und yourself with individuals you admire to ensure learning, growth, and potential references down the line.) While expert, Jodi Glickman, suggests breaking out of your comfort zone as the initial criteria to build strong relationships, Chester Elton advocates that our skills, motivations and personality play an equal role in finding jobs and being satisfied with them. How to be a more empathetic leader, from executives

How to be a more empathetic leader, from executives How to be a more empathetic leader, from executives No matter how many degrees you earned or subjects you master, there are some skills that are best learned through experience. As professionals develop their careers and rise to leadership positions, some demands of management are second-nature, while others may take time to fully cultivate. One of the most overlooked but most important qualities of leading a team of people is empathy. As the chief talent officer of MONO Julie Vessel explains, an empathetic leader means you see people as, well people. Not as consumers, employees or clients - but as human beings with emotions, ideas, values, and opinions.“Empathetic leaders look at all things through the context of people: people who have feelings, lives, aspirations, struggles, strengths, and imperfections,” she continues. “To an empathetic leader, people are not just a resource to be managed or optimized.“Rather, they understand that people are the most valuable asset in a company. And like anything valuable, they see the imp ortance of understanding, protecting, nurturing and building the value of that asset. It’s personal.”Maintaining budgets, remaining organized, providing constructive reviews and being generous with salaries and other perks is all part of your job description, which might make you wonder why adding another requirement is so essential.Jim Ayres, the managing director of Amway North America explains this interpersonal proficiency allows you to forge stronger - and more meaningful - connections to those around you, based on trust and understanding. Not only does this making working more enjoyable, but it helps employees to invest more deeply in their jobs because they feel supported. And inevitably, this means a higher level of performance. For 2019, make empathy a top priority. Here, 9 executives share their best strategies for getting started:Create customized employment packagesWhile creating streamlined interviewing and hiring processes allows your company to bring on new peopl e quickly, the same old offer letter and benefits explanation shouldn’t be divvied out to every single person. One of the ways to start an employee’s experience with your company out on an empathetic foot is to evaluate their unique needs from the moment you invite them to join your company, according to Lindsay Myers, the founder of Concrete Blonde Consulting.“Take the talent’s priorities into account when putting together employment packages. Different people value different assets,” she explains. “One person may want flexible hours while another cares more about vacation time.“Realize that taking people’s feelings into account isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. People are individuals and treating them as such will ensure stronger outcomes.”Take a long-term perspectiveExecutives are not only moving at a heightened pace, but they have a finger or toe in nearly every part of the business. This makes any type of disturbance to workflow feel like a catastrophe at the moment, which can yield some negative reactions. Though it can be difficult when you’re pressed to meet goals right now, CEO and cofounder of ChairmanMom Sarah Lacy urges leaders to see the long-term perspective. Especially when an employee is faking a crossroads or a difficult period, emphasizing with their situation will mean prolonged commitment.“If an employee needs to, say, take an extended leave, it’s easy to see that as a drain on resources. However, not having to replace that employee will almost always save you more time and money,” she gives as an example. “Be there for your employees and they’ll be there for you. This goes two ways though- good employees also understand what you need. It has to be a give and take.”Surround yourself with diversityPart of being able to not only recognize but understand where your employees are coming from is welcoming diversity into your workplace. Anticipating and attracting a large set of customers, after all, requires y ou have many people on your team who can speak to a demographic background, economic statuses and so on.“Seek out a diversity of experiences in life, and recruit people with diverse perspectives to be on your team. They will help you uncover your blind spots, identify fresh opportunities and solve problems in innovative ways,” said Christine Andrukonis, president and founder of Notion Consulting.Cultivate interpersonal relationshipsYou might believe you know each of your direct-reports but how often do you meet one-on-one with each of them? Do you know what’s happening in their personal lives, including recent celebrations or changes? Ayres explains maintaining old relationships while forging new ones is critical to being an empathetic leader. He suggests scheduling consistent meetings will help to solidify your relationship.“Every Friday, I choose a different employee to invite to breakfast - often selecting those I don’t see or interact with often, to kick off the day,â € he continues. “Being an effective leader means building strong relationships with those you lead and developing a thorough understanding of their needs.“This is an easy way to gain useful and sometimes surprising insights, which can help you become a more informed leader.”Work to understand other people’s prioritiesChelsie Lee, the cofounder and CEO of Shipsi, challenges leaders to go through a short exercise to identify some of their empathetic blind spots. First, she says to think back to your first job and list what your top three priorities were. Now, think of your next gig, and do the same. The point of this practice is to realize depending on your stage of life and career, your deal breakers shifted.“Each person on your team could be coming from a completely different place. Pay attention to that as you interact with them,” she continues. “Though someone might go on and on about something you don’t care about, or urgently call for something incredibly last-m inute - understand where they are coming from. Realize and be thankful.“Notice it’s because they actually give a damn about that project that might seem tiny to you, but it’s a mountain to them.”Give people your undivided attentionThe last time you sat down with your marketing lead, what were you doing? Well, meeting with your marketing, lead right? Probably not. In fact, you likely checked your phone, maybe read some emails, or zoned out thinking about something else. Vessel shares part of being empathetic is giving your employees your undivided attention when you’re meeting with them.“Leaders can’t truly relate, understand or empathize if they’re distracted or disengaged. If it doesn’t seem like you care, it’s likely that your people won’t care as much either. If you rush and aren’t engaged, they likely won’t be either,” she continues. So, she recommends stepping away from your phone and laptop. Don’t think about your to-do list, and focus on who is s itting in front of you. “All these little things show you care about them and what they have to say,” she adds.Listen first. Speak secondAnother part of empathetic leadership? Following that rule your grandma suggested many moons ago and remember you have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Or as the CEO of Globoforce Eric Mosley shares, listen first - and speak second.“Communication is essential to understanding the feelings of others, yet the fast pace of business today, despite all the technological advancements designed to bring us closer together, can sometimes hinder our ability to connect with others,” he shares. “Listening attentively allows you to fully absorb information, process it, and develop a meaningful response.”This also means you don’t need to go into instant problem-solve mode when your team is facing any issue. Give them support and assistance as they explain their struggles and you can work through it together - rather than speaking over them.Be cognizant of how your words and actions affect peopleWhile listening will go a long way, you definitely can’t lead a company without, ya know, talking. But when you choose your words to employees, many executives are unaware of how personally and intently they take them to heart, according to the CEO of Basis, Andrew Chapin. Especially when you aren’t being your best self.“You may be having a bad day or be frustrated by something, but how you act in response reverberates across your team,” he explains. “Being dismissive of someone’s input or not being engaged in a one-on-one meeting can have huge second-order effects on morale and productivity.”Ask questionsEven if you’re no a bonafide journalist, there’s a lesson you can learn from their way of doing business: questions are meaningful. In fact, cofounder of Thirty Madison, Steven Gutentag explains when you inquire within a conversation, it illustrates you’re invested.“Part of active listening is watching body language and listening to what’s not being said. That helps me ask better questions and be a more active partner in a conversation. This also helps in building a stronger rapport with everyone on my team, which has helped build more powerful bonds across the company,” he explains.
